4.0/5.04.0/5.04.0/5.04.0/5.04.0/5.0   I got it cheap
Reviewer: Anonymous from Singapore     March 06, 2002
I was looking for a small CD-player with radio only, who needs cassettes nowadays. And I come across the ZS-M35 in one shop at the shopping mall. The price is S$199.00 instead of S$379 in others. Grab the player without even hearing the sound, probably attracted by the good design. When I test it out at home, it sounds good for it's size although being called a "boombox". Well, the only problem is that the radio reception is quite poor besides that you need to plug on the wall if you need to play it.
Overall, this "boombox" really surprises me, only today then i realise it is actually a 2 years old model. But what the heck, it sounds good and cheap!

5.0/5.05.0/5.05.0/5.05.0/5.05.0/5.0   Great sound, good looking & versatile

The Sony ZS-M35 is an outstanding boombox featuring AM/FM stereo and a CD/MD recorder. Because it has a built-in clock, it can also be used as an alarm clock. You can wake to MD, CD, or the radio. You can also use the unit's timer to record your favorite radio shows off the air while you're away (aka "time shifting" in the VCR world).

And because you can record in mono, you can cram 160 minutes onto on disc (only minor drawback-- this unit is pre-MDLP).

I actually use this unit as my bedside alarm clock. It's probably a bit big for this purpose, but it sounds great to wake up to. Also, since I bought it from Minidiscmall.com, I was able to order it in orange (which some people might find a little too "precious") but I LOVE the look (and color) of this unit. (The front screen is almost all orange and the back is "iMac"-like translucent orange.) Much better looking than any on-line images makes it look.

(Note this unit requires, and comes with, a step-down transformer if you buy the Japanese model from MDmall. You can also go basic black and get the US version from Amazon.com for $299.)

A couple other cool features The LED clock can be turned off, to save power and make your room a little darker at night. And, it comes with the REC IT feature. With this, you can record a track from a CD to MD by simply pushing the button WHILE that track is playing. The CD player then goes back to the beginning of that track and records it to MD.

To conclude Looks great, sounds great, built Ram-tough. Only MAJOR shortcoming, which is true of almost every MD boombox ever made (except that one by Casio), does NOT run on batteries. (Will Sony ever learn?) Otherwise, a great box.

5.0/5.05.0/5.05.0/5.05.0/5.05.0/5.0   Fantastic, cheap, and it looks damn good, too!

From the moment I saw this unit on MiniDisc.Org, I knew I had to have it. Now that I've actually bought and used the ZS-M35, I can't say I'm truly disappointed. Yes, there are some gripes, like the lack of battery support, but, well, that's about it.

I own the blue version of this boombox and, boy is it gorgeous! It looks great from the front... from the top it looks a trifle large. The weight is slightly greater than that of an average CD/Cassette boombox (even incl. batteries) but doesn't render it too difficult to carry around. The 2 5W speakers do a terrific job and the presets are a definite must to optimize your music experience.

The high-speed CDMD dubbing works like a charm, and though it officially has a 2x speed, I've found it to occasionally rise to about 2.5x speed. High-speed dubbing doesn't lock out sound output, rather, you hear a "chipmunked" version of the CD tracks you're recording (I've never done high-speed dubbing with cassettes, so I have no idea if this is considered normal operation).

The remote control supplied almost lets you totally ignore the actual unit, except for insertion of media, of course. Titling via the 9 telephone style buttons was a breeze, though it would be nice to have one of the buttons double up as a spacebar, rather than having to push the forward cursor button twice for each new word. It would be nice to have Name Bank feature (a la MZ-R90/91) included to speed up the titling process.

The price of this unit is a definite plus; although the US MSRP is US$349.95, the MSRP in Singapore is S$399, or approx US$232... that's a GREAT deal cheaper than what you guys have to pay! I was so thrilled with the price I didn't even bother to try bargaining; I've friends who managed to get theirs for less than retail.

So, all in all, if you're looking for a minihifi system that you'd like to be able to lug around between home and work (or school), the ZS-M35 is a unit to merit some very serious consideration indeed.

4.0/5.04.0/5.04.0/5.04.0/5.04.0/5.0   This one's a keeper!

As a supplement to the general information on the ZS-M35 that is listed in the overview, I'd like to add some user comments.
This unit is much nicer looking than the promotional photos would leave you to believe. I have the black model (I'm not so sure I could live with one of the other colors). It is about the size of a large table radio. It has a blue LED display that dims when turned off and shows the time. There is a power saving function that turns off the display all together. The control layout at first seems a bit odd but when youve identified the function(s) of all the buttons, they quickly become second nature. When you enter the edit modes, all the buttons become backlit by a soft, yellow-green glow that looks really sharp. Altogether, it is a very sleek and handsome design.
The sound is very impressive for such a small unit with a published 5w + 5w output. If you play it without engaging one of the equalization presets, youll probably be disappointed. I find that activating the Mega-Bass and either the "Rock" or "Jazz" preset offers a very satisfying sound. I turned up the volume to room filling levels and have experienced no distortion.
The x2 record speed from CD works like a champ. MDs recorded this way sound great, even when played back on my JA20ES through my hi-fi system. Its also extremely easy to setup and record this way. You literally only press 3 buttons.
There are a couple of negative points. First, the unit is AC powered only. I suppose this makes it a boombox in name only. A true portable would be able to operate off batteries (I imagine that 6 or 8 D cells would give you about an hours worth of record time). Secondly, the FM reception, in a word, sucks. Very poor station separation. Neither of these two issues bother me overly much, but they could be a big deal to another prospective buyer.
Over all, I highly recommend this unit. I think it is worth every penny of the $350 I paid for it. If I had to do it again knowing what I know now, I definitely would.
