About half a year ago, I bought the JE640 deck, mainly because I found that my portable Sony MZ-R70 is not really suitable for use as part of my home stereo system. I wanted something easier to use, and with a better sound (mainly restricted by the stereo-jack output of the MZ-R70), primarily to record CD's.
The JE640 is a step up from the basic model, the JE440. It has a PS2 connector for a keyboard, and digital outputs (coax and optical).
The sound quality is excellent. Back-to-back comparisons with my CD player (Onkyo DX-706, a quite good one, the source for the recordings) reveals a difference, but it is not possible to tell which is the CD player and which is the MD deck.
The keyboard option, the jog dial and the sync recording make it the easiest to use piece of equipment I have. The keyboard connector is a must-have, using the keyboard, putting titles on the tracks takes no time at all.
All in all, I really like this deck a lot, it's a very good buy. The only niggles I can think of are that the options of displaying the titles are limited, and the fast forward/backward is not as easy to use as on a CD player.
Note that the deck has lots of other options, MDLP of course, but also pitch-shifting, record level adjusting and more.
