I bought this AM-F70 3 years ago and it still runs strong, never had a problem with it and the quality in sound and build was and still is one of the best I have heard. The only problem I have got is the Lithium Ion Battery has got weak and I cannot locate any dealer to replace it, any ideas for US dealers, please mail me... playtime2@hotmail.com

Best Features for an MD this old

This player has to be the best. I got it a few months ago used...in MINT condition. The backlit remote and LCD is what made me stop considering the NetMD's by sony. THe netMDs may be smaller, but the features are lacking, unless you get the top model (which doesn't have backlit display) MDLP isn't on the model, but mono recording is just as nice because you get twice the amount of space (160 minutes on a 80 minute MD) . Optical recording is what i use it the most for. Record MP3's to CD-RW and use optical cable to get the highest quality results. I don't find a problem with the remote at all. The earphones are decent quality, but the chord is a bit short. The job dial is excellent for titling and you can also title songs while they are being recorded. There is also a rechargable battery and a battery case that holds 3 AA batteries. Just put some velco on the back of the player and battery case and it works fine. In the end i decided to sacrifice speed, MDLP, and battery life (compared to netMD's) for this player. THe features that come with this player beat out any of the feature that come with the tiny displays and capabilities that the netMD's possess.

Awesome Minidisc player

I absolutely love this minidisc player. I have had this for two years and has only broken once due to my fault. I pulled out a minidisc way too fast and also put pressure on the insides, and I broke something inside it. BUT I sent it to Aiwa and they fixed it for free. I have never had any problems since. I love all the features of this recorder, and it is such a great unit. I cannot believe it has lasted so long with all my terrible mistakes I have made with it. i have dropped it onto cement from about a 4 and a half feet distance so many times. I have spilled water on it (oops). There may be a couple dents and scratches, but it still is working strongly! I can't say enough good things about this minidisc player without wasting away my day!

I studied the MD technology for three years before I invested in the AM-70. I have now had this unit for 2 years and have found it absolutely fantastic. I switch off the backlit on the main unit to save power but You can't switch off the remote's backlight. At home I don't use the remote. In the car I use a standard CD-type car kit with power from the lighter. The sound quality is excellent in the car (compared to cassette which hums). I use the remote in the car and easily navigate through tracks. I have had no equipment failure. I use an optical line in to record from CD which gives great sound. The size of the unit is no problem since I never carry in my pocket. It is really only half an inch longer than the smallest units around. I have used program tracks function a few times but not as much as I thought I would. So don't buy it thinking this is a big bonus feature. I use random play all the time which is very useful. My only problem has been that there is some memory effect in the Lithium Ion battery but it still charges and works. The Aiwa supplied recharger/AC adaptor has circuitry in it which allows recharging. I found that other generic AC adaptors provide power but don't charge. So do not lose your charger! MD was design to replace other recording media like tape. It is 100 times better than tape if you evaluate all the features. I use this MD several times a week and it is a prized possession. I bought the gold Japanese model which is a quality color compared to standard silver. If you can get one cheap it's a great investment.

This is a great sounding, provided you replace the headphones, player and recorder. I have recorded concerts with it and they have come out perfect.

Aiwa's MD player/recorder, the AM-F70 is one of the best ones in my portable collection. The battery longevity is pretty adequate, rechargable = 14 hrs. w/ Battery case = 40 hrs. The sound quality on this recorder is really good if you like lots of bass, i crank up on the sound on it all the time. i dropped it a few times too and it did not skip once yet. I found this little gem on sale for 179 usd. I'm not tellin what e-commerce site, i spent 3 nights lookin' for good deals you go out an find it. (;P)

If you bought this unit two years ago, you would have had on of the best units on the market. Still, it is an excellent device with good battery life (incredible with the bulky cell case), great sound quality, and the indispensible jog dial. Titling MDs with unit is second only to having a full-fledged keyboard attached to a deck; the jog dial is just that good. The only units to have a backlit LCD on the main unit are Aiwa models, and it is a real godsend as well.
Gripes bulky compared to todays latest units (even units of its day were generally smaller than the AM-F70). The remote, while providing lots of functionality (including the ability to get into Record-Pause mode) is just oriented poorly and I often found it have to place comfortably because of that.
Overall solid unit and a great value if you can still get one in good condition for little money.
