I bought the MD AM-F80 just over a year ago. Thought it was excellent for the first few months. Then it became faulty, and kept telling me that the door was "OPEN" when actually it was closed. Then one day i accidentally dropped it on the floor and suddenly it started working again, but now and then it would go back to saying that the door was "OPEN". Now, out of the bloom, it constantly says on the screen "NO ADJ!". I looked it up in the manual and for the message displays in there, it does not even say that this is suppost to show. I have no idea what it means, i do not know what to do and cannot now use my MiniDisc at all due to this problem. Very disappointed as i thought it was an excellent product at first. A friend of mine, has recently told me that they had the same product and the same problem with theirs, and have since bought a Sony. If anyone has had this type of problem then please help! I now have no MiniDisc to use. Will be complaining to Aiwa as i payed £229.99 for it. BUYERS BE AWARE OF THIS PRODUCT!

All in all this unit is pretty easy to use and its controls are well laid out. But it doesn't work at all in hot and humid environments, which (in Texas anyway) is a real handicap.

It came with the best MD pouch I have seen and the only MD with a backlit display on the main unit. It had many features my mate with a MZ-55 didn't have (jog dial, program mode, alarm) so I was very pleased at first and treasured it. However, after 6 months it failed to work. I think I left it in my cold car too long and from then on whenever I moved it the power would go. I have read of this happening to others with the AM F-80! Aiwa are no longer making minidiscs so it will probably become a rare classic. It was ahead of it's time in terms of features, style etc...and for a reasonable price (200) but quality was poor and I would give one a years lifespan at most. I think this is reflected in the rapid price reduction of the model in shops (99 as of the 00/12/00). Incidently my mates MZ-55 still works, but I got a refund on my broken F-80 and plan to get the new sony R900 which should make my mate sick as a pig.

Great for playback, but fatal quirk in analog record

Had the unit for a few days after giving the Sharp 821 a test drive. I needed the backlit LCD (very cool) and I wanted a date stamp. HOWEVER, in analog record (with mic), while using the remote control ONLY, the unit records a high pitch processor noise for a couple of seconds if you use the Pause/Play buttons to start and stop recording. Ouch. That means it is close to useless for serious live recorders. Sorry...sent it back.

This thing didn't work after being used for only a year. But otherwise, it's quite good. yea, that's basically it. *doesn't come with optical cable *headphones look bad but sound good *quite heavy compared to Sony MZR 55(same era) *nice Jog Dial but makes the machine bigger

because he gave me a AM-C80 for our one month anniversary gift! Well, I am not a gadget person like all of you who are reading this review, but just know that even for an eletronics illiterate person that I am, I can still operate this thing without a problem (now that's tough!). of course, that was with the help of my boyfriend. anyway, this things looks really nice and the main panel lights up. from what I know, this is the only unit that has a lighting up panel. Also, I L O V E the jog dial thing. I can't imagine living a life without it. It makes titling so much easier. And I love just sitting around (especially on the plane) to title my songs. Over all it's a great unit. And another advice for all you guys out there, "give your girlfriends/wifes/kids a MiniDisc!
