As a guy with a significant Sony-bias, I was not prepared to covet this little player as much as a do. But once you get hold of this beautifully designed MD, it is indeed an impressive little package.
If you've seen the pictures of the ST-50 at T-Station, you know it's a tiny player, available in sundry "candy colors", that comes with a matching colorful charging stand.
What you can't see from the photos is how solidly it's built. Or how small, but sturdy it feels in your hand. Or, dare I say it, how darn CUTE it looks. As someone with a passion for bright, primary colors, I purchased the yellow ST-50, but it also comes in orange, pink, blue, green and red (although some colors are easier to find and purchase than others).
Fun features include 1) A matching colorful, albeit well-designed, remote. It's a little "plumper" than most, but it has a VERY bright LED display that says "Hello" and "Goodbye" when you power up and down. 2) A translucent "iMac" colored backside that allows you to see whether a battery is inserted. 3) A colorful plastic front piece that allows you to see if a disc is inserted. 4) A three-level bass boost and a sound that, I must admit, does seem louder and brighter (perhaps a bit too bright) when compared to my Sonys. And 5) Playback that begins when a disc is inserted (discs insert from the side, instead of the top or bottom).
Battery life is acceptable, rated at 21 hours with just the "chewing gum" battery, but if you're looking for a unit that's quite affordable (presently $162 plus shipping at HyperJack through T-Station), very stylish AND colorful to boot, the ST-50 may be just right for you.
