If you're like me, you love minidisc but you rarely use the provided remote control. Why? Because it's one more chord you don't need dangling off your body--especially if you're using your MD for working out in the gym or jogging around the neighborhood. What's more, if you're engaged in vigorous activity, the clip that holds the remote to your clothing invariably pops off and has to be refastened.

So, you leave the remote at home and end up digging around in your fanny pack or arm band to adjust volume, change tracks, or shut off the unit so you can hear what's going on around you (e.g. someone's trying to talk to you).

If you can relate to any of what I've just said, you'll love the new MZ-E606W--the lastest wireless remote controlled player from Sony. Unlike the earlier "big honking wrist band" wireless remote that Sony made, the 606 has an extremely tiny remote about the size of a silver dollar and not much thicker. It allows you to adjust volume, play, stop, and skip forward or ahead through tracks. It does not have an LCD, but the unit itself does. The remote also has a HOLD button, as does the player. Finally, the remote matches the main unit in button layout and color (my is BRIGHT yellow, but the 606 also comes in blue and silver).

When you push play on the remote, you hear a beep, fast forward, you hear two quick beeps, and fast rewind you hear three quick beeps. All the beeping is defeatable, as is the tiny LED on the unit (to improve battery life). (By the way, the unit comes with Sony's least powerful "chewing gum" battery, the NC-6WM.)

But what I'm sure you're more interested in is, "How well does this remote control work?" Well, I tried it two different ways one, with the main unit in the my Sony armband carrying case on my left bicep and the remote in my right hand and two, with the 606 in my fanny pack and the remote pinned to my clothing. Either way, it worked perfectly. I hit play, I heard a beep and several seconds later (yes, it's a bit slow on start up) the music started playing. I hit FF, I heard two beeps and the next track began playing. And so on.

The remote does not have to be pointed at the player, but the signal doesn't travel all that far . (But hey, if you're listening to 606 with headphones, how far does the remote signal have to travel?)

The point is, you can be sitting on your front porch, listening to some tunes, and if the UPS guy walks up and starts talking to you and you've got the 606's remote in your hand, you can easily hit stop and hear every word he says. Or, if you're jogging and you come to a busy intersection, you can hit stop with the tiny, extremely light remote in your hand (or, as I suggested earlier, pinned to your shirt or the waistband of your shorts/pants) you can easily hear the traffic and, when you've safely crossed, crank the tunes again.

Point is, there's no clip to monkey with, no dangling chord to contend with, and you get the basic controls you'll need. Why, just today I was raking leaves, listening to tunes when my neighbor walked over to say "hello". Without digging in my fanny pack or whipping out my earbuds, I was able to quickly hit STOP on the tiny remote (which was affixed to my jeans pocket with a tiny safety pin) and not miss a word he was saying.

Can you tell I like this player? Now if Sony could just invent some tiny wireless earbuds, I'd be totally chord-free, which would suit me just fine.
