MD Live Recording Workhorse

I have had the MZ-R37 for about a year and a half now and have been almost completely satisfied. Luckily I was able to find it at $120.00 US (refurbished). Mainly, I have utilized it for live recordings with a Sony stereo mic and powered condenser and the recording sound quality is the best you can get without putting the cash into a DAT. One will definitely notice some light hiss during the silence in live recordings, but if worked on with the help of sound editing software, it can be alleviated for the most part. In live settings, again it comes down to mic placement. I suggest monitoring with headphones and once you find the sweet spot, you are there! Live sound Quality at a fair price: I have noticed lately that Sony has really went towards the marketing of MD's for the Net world, and has failed to put mic inputs on many of there newer models. Be aware of this when you are in search. For the ones who wish to do live recording, it is a great model! If you are lucky, they can be found second hand on ebay. It is slightly larger than the newer colorful "plastic" models, but it will definitely do the job!
One comment on the newer models: Buttons on the fragile hinged doors! Handle carefully or risk repair costs. All frequently operated buttons on the MZ-R37 are on the side.
Cons: No LCD backlight, no optical out(digital send), light hiss(live recordings), no longer made. Pros: Sturdy metal casing(,except battery door), practical/fair price, mic input, a thoughtfully designed workhorse!

well i do love the mini disc and it does everything i want it too, but fixing it is a bugger im tellin ya i bought it second hand and it needed some work, a new screen, and the skip forward button was pressed in. luckily my friend new of another one for sale for like $50 and so i grabbed that. but now that it was all fixed up it was great for a little while but the button got smashed in again. I guess you could say that i use it everyday but i think a product shoud be able to be used all the time. so it's a great MD but if you don't have techincal support then it can get frustrating! good luck i say try a newer stationary model with a MD portible player to even out the use!

I've had this one for about a year now, and wish I'd spent a few more bucks. It's a solid little unit, but for such a big player it should have some usable keys on the front. I'm sure the remote helps a lot, but I gave up on titling, I have to use my fingernail to push any but the play buttons. To Sony's credit, I have taken this unit snowboarding, mountain biking, on DJ gigs, and it has weathered the abuse very well. There are quite a few of these units on eBay that are all banged, huge dents and such, that still work. They aren't made anymore, but if you can find one, I wouldn't spend more than $75 for new. I'm thinking about replacing it just so I'll have something I will be more likely to actually use the way I intended.

I really don't use this thing much for music recording/playback, but for doing stuff like grabbing sound effects or recording off a police scanner, it really does the trick. The only issues I have with this model is that there's no 'record' button on the remote and some of the buttons on the control panel are dinky. This recorder works with an analog mike just as well as with a digital one.

I took the MD plunge with the MZ-R37. You MUST buy a recorder to begin with because pre-recorded titles are difficult to find. I purchased my unit at a Sony Outlet Store for $69.95 with full warranty & all the accessories this week. It has all the features I need to convert my CD titles to MD format. I will be using this unit in my auto to replace my Car Discman. It has performed flawlessly so far.

I just bought this recorder new for $98.00. It is small lightwieght and easy to use. It works just as good as a $250.00 model. It may not have as many features, but it still records and plays with ease. If you have a load of money don't buy this model. If you're broke this recoder is great.

this is a good recorder to get into the format, however it only has 10 sec skip protection (new zealand model) which isnt sufficient. However it does have nice sound quality and excellent bass when used with headphones. the battery life is pretty good at about 8-10 hours so it lasts me about a week. The remote has no LCD, but it has a good layout so you dont need to look at it. it has a weak front cover which is dented on mine, but it has a bump on there as well to protect the recording head.

i bought this unit for about 120 dollars. i owned a sharp md-mt15 but it failed on me. so i bought this one hoping it wouldn't. it is good for recording and the bass boost is very useful. the only problem i have with it is the size. i'm thinking of buying a good sony MD player and keeping my r37 to record my mixes.
