I wouldve given it 4.5, but no choice of that. But it has great sound, it is kind of annoying having the lump in the back and backlit wouldve been nice, but then it wouldnt have been affordable. This is a great first MD Player/Recorder. It is kind of heavy and is plastic, but it has great sound and never skips. I also find the recording annoying, because there is about a 2 to 3 second delay before it starts. Also, the autosync does NOT work at all.

I got it about 2 weeks ago and love it! the pc link is great, i record all my mp3s through it and they sound awesome! good plugins for winamp to get are dfx and wincue. DFX makes the mp3s sound a whole lot better and wincue will allow you to set a time for pausing so you can automatically start new tracks.
this model is great, so what if it doens't have a remot control, i can keep it in my pocket, put my ear buds up under my shirt, and stick my hand in my pocket to change any tracks or volume or anything with it.
the only probs i have is the earphones.. they suck! I gave them to my sister. I just got some earbuds with ear clips.. they work great, they're blue like my player too!

Recording is relatively easy. Weight is pretty light. However, since all the pictures of this player/recorder is only of the front, I was pleasantly surprised to find this gigantic hump on the back where the AA battery goes. It makes the player considerably larger in the back and not flat which is annoying. Good overall player but if size is important to you, you might want to look at something else.

I have owned this unit for about 3 weeks. I love it. It's small, light weight, and easy to use. I have a few problems with it though. First the silver paint is wearing away to reveal white plastic, and the red model number is wearing away too. I also don't like the digitat up/down volume. Another thing is I wish that when you hit record it starts in paused mode. But this unit has gold plated connections on the headphones and the battery contacts. It also came with the PC LINK kit, I found it useful. I had trouble finding a AC adaptor for it due to it's Type A connector. The MDLP is great. Not a big fan of the 4X mode, but 2X is good ) All in all, I'd rate this a good machine. It has it's problems, but you get what you pay for! It never skips, it always plays and records. Access time on tracks is just a little slower than CD. I also found that Sony's battery projections are fairly accurate. This is a good unit to enter the world of MD with.

I purchased a sharp md-mt15. It worked fine for about two months and broke. Then i bought a sony mr-37. this one didn't break but the fast forward button on it has to be pressed with your nail. So my parents bought me the mz-r500 for my 8th grade graduation gift. i've only had it for a couple days but so far it has been the best recorder i have seen. It has lots of funtionality MDLP, small size, long battery life(about 40 hours on one AA battery) And it also came with a pc link. I like it better than the r70 because of the MDLP. The only thing that i don't like is that the LCD is not backlit. The remote is not important to me. But if this unit had a backlit LCD it would have gotten a 5.

After much comparison this model rocks.. There is only an AA battery which lasts hours, and you get "MDLP" which doesnt sound too bad. The 2X is perfect for Mp3s. 4X is like 96kbps. Why buy the MZ700 just for a crappy remote ?? You cant record the MZG700 radio..The MZ900 gives an equaliser which you can preamp anyway. The MZ500 v.light and v.stable. This MD player is all you need. BUT May have to buy some better earphones + no backlit screen.

This is my first Mini Disc player/recorder. The unit has excellent features and the battery lasts forever !I find the LP recording feature very useful as I can fit the whole zepplin box set on just one disc ! Only drawback I have is that there is no input for a microphone. I recommend the MZ-R500 model to anyone that wants to get intersted in exploring the world of Mini Disc technology.

Well what can i say? This is my first MD recorder and i love it. I was looking at the MZ-R700, but being a young student on a low budget I decided on this one. This model has MDLP and i fitted all my MP3's on about 3 MD's! The only problems were the headphones are v.uncomfortable, the screen is a little small and there is no remote control, but if you don't mind that then i would definatley go for this one. It has most of the features of better models with a great price!
