5.0/5.05.0/5.05.0/5.05.0/5.05.0/5.0   Nice!!
Reviewer: MC from Ohio     January 05, 2003
I bought the MZ-R500 before christmas, it was an open-box buy at Circuit City for $75, I thought that it was a good deal, being a newbie to MD, i have always been interested in MD but I never really had the money to spend. I had a 32 meg mp3 player, it was ok, but you couldnt store many songs and there was no permanant cheap removable media for it. I was looking at a portable mp3cd player and thought it was too bulky, being used to the smallness of the mp3 player. I deciced to give the MD a try, once i first recorded an MD it skipped really bad even when it sat still. I took it back and luckily there was another available and exchanged mine for it. I have had the new one for about 4 weeks and I love it!

5.0/5.05.0/5.05.0/5.05.0/5.05.0/5.0   Great Value. Suprisingly Durable (for a sony)
Reviewer: WHAT WHAT?     December 14, 2002
I have owned this puppy for over a year and i can say that i am extremely happy with its performance. I am a heavy user and I have dropped this little player on concrete from 5ft approximately 3 times and it has survived (don't recommend it though)>
My recommendation is spend the cash if you're on a budget on a good set of headphones to maximize the potential on any music equipment rather than shelling out for a fancy player with factory earphones.

what can i say about this? it's not the smallest md player around but smaller than a cd player for sure!

only gripe about this guy? not loud enough at times and it does skip if more than i expected but i would recommend this over a MP3 PLAYER anyday. atrac is better quality

5.0/5.05.0/5.05.0/5.05.0/5.05.0/5.0   Tough (not wimpy) and an incredible value!!!
Reviewer: musicmonger@aol.com from San Francisco     April 28, 2002
The battery (one AA) lasts about two-weeks 40+ hours of listening time; the controls are easy to learn, despite that the lettering is super tiny, but the logic is easy to get; these units are tough and I mean tough, I take this baby to the gym MON-FRI for an hour a cardio and I've literally had this unit flung (my arms catch the ear-phone cord) from its perch 3-times and it goes sailing across the room and hits the floor making a sound that is usually accompanited by the sound of shattering but it not only remains intact but it keeps on playing as though it never left my side. Have not tried the MDLP feature yet though I am looking forward to discovering it. I bought one, my second one in 7-years (the sony's are long lasting) on April 6th at the GoodGuys for $139, then on sale at $10 off from $149; turned around and foudn them on ubid, the same model but in yellow only, fresh and sealed in their boxes, and I got 'em for $89 apiece and gave them away as gifts to people I am converting from MP3 low-grade expensive medium format. This is the way to go at least for now samll enough to be truly portable and while you can lose the minidiscs themselves they are not as easy to lose as the new DataPlay disc will be, and for what they're going to cost apiece, I'll sticking with CDS for some time to come. Thank you!!!

5.0/5.05.0/5.05.0/5.05.0/5.05.0/5.0   Long Live MiniDisc
Reviewer: lbaroody@aol.com from Lyndhurst, New Jersey     March 05, 2002
I want to thank my Brother-In-Law who came up from Florida for the holidays he is on his 2nd in 5 years. Bought my first one Feb.2nd and I have'nt stopped using it since.
Previously used a CD/R for all my mixes now I can load up Winamp with 40-50 mp3's come back 3 hrs. later and still have 2 hrs. left for more more music. I use LP4 all the time and the difference is mininal.
Great for the old LP's and tapes too!
Now I can take all those burned Cd's out of the car, and carry 1 -2 small discs around. It is great for long trips in the car, 1 disc 5hrs. no more fumbling with CD'S while your doing 65mph.
Only one small complaint a back-lit and larger display would have been nice but other than that, it is the best purchase I have made in years.

5.0/5.05.0/5.05.0/5.05.0/5.05.0/5.0   Great entry level player/recorder. Great features.
Reviewer: ckmyers@cland.net from Missouri, The Heartland     January 07, 2002
I have really adopted a hobby of obtaining and creating my own mp3's this year. I have been burning mp3 cdr's and using a Philips mp3 cd player for playback but was unhappy with the size of the unit.

I was looking into the Apple iPod, being a Mac user. But at $400 I knew that would not happen. THEN, I saw the R-500! I have been interested in MD players for some time. I work in television and use professional MD. Then I saw this unit had MDLP and was half the price of the iPod, I knew I had to have it.

I love the MDLP feature. Like another reviewer said, you can fit some box sets on one MD! And I think they sound great. LP2 is preferencial to LP4. But the differences are debateable.

I will agree. Backlit and larger display would have been nice, but not a huge deal. It would have been really nice if an optical cable and ac adapter were included. But again, nothing I could not find elsewhere.

I have not been disappointed with the quality in recordings. I have not had a failed MD yet and have made about a dozen or so MD's in a few weeks. I find the button arrangement on the front to be quite nice and the battery life is astounding!

Also, unlike some reviewers, I really like the SYNC-R mode. I hook the unit to my Sony DVD player via optical and it works perfect. Makes me want to get the optical PC Link instead of the analog PC Link that came with the unit.

Headphones. I also gave my new set to my wife. I have been using a set of lightweight, folding Sony headphones that do a great job and are very compact when folded. I also have a Sony Studio headphone set that sound even better.

All in all, I would highly recommend this unit for anyone wanting a great entry level player/recorder. Bottom line is though, MD is the way to go if you are looking for a compact, good quality portable music player. Long live Sony!

5.0/5.05.0/5.05.0/5.05.0/5.05.0/5.0   It does work!
Reviewer: iansaint@hotmail.com from UK     January 04, 2002
The sync recording does work - well using the optical line from my PS2 anyway. LP4 doesn't sound much different from normal when recorded from the PS2. Being able to fit 5 or 6 albums on one disc is great - it's also so small and light. The bump isn't a problem at all - without it you'd have to buy really expensive CRetc. batteries - instead of cheap double A - which last an amazing 36 hours. The headphones are really comfortable and it's really easy to use.

4.0/5.04.0/5.04.0/5.04.0/5.04.0/5.0   Great player/recorder for the money!
Reviewer: A. Kaplan from Boca Raton, Florida     December 20, 2001
I originally walked into Best Buy expecting to buy a Sony Clie, since I had $200 to burn...and walked out with this little marvel. For $180, you get a MiniDisc player with great sound, looks, and features. While I wished I had known that this player lacks microphone inputs, a remote, and other key features such as backlighting, it does what it was meant to do Play and record MiniDiscs...and it does this well might I add. The sound quality is superb, and the PCLink works well. I have found the highs can be a bit harsh with the MP3s, but other than that the sound is smooth. Techno, rock, and classical sound great...the strings instruments sound spectacular...even in LP2, and I'm somewhat picky about my audio. It is quite durable, too. I have dropped it many times, not a scratch...even when it was hit so hard the MiniDisc popped out. Finally, I get complements about how cool this little device is--people always want to try it out, and they love to play with the "disc-pop" feature. If you are considering a MiniDisc player, buy this--just make sure you replace the headphones and buy an optical cable. You won't be disapointed.

5.0/5.05.0/5.05.0/5.05.0/5.05.0/5.0   Sony does it again.
Reviewer: Clinton from Harrisonburg, Virgnia. USA     December 19, 2001
Sony once again proves that they are the king of consumer audio product. This is my first MD recorder and I bought it over a MP3 player and I can say I am quite glad. Sony has put together a great package here. This baby has everyting you need (ok so thats debatable) to get started in the md world. I have had this baby for about 3 months now. and I can say I love it. I am totaly sold on the md format. it's wonderful. you get all the advantages of MP3 (light, portable un shockable)) and the advantages of CD. (cheap media, pre recorded albums, ok they're a bit limited but I do have a few) so much more I can go on. sure I could have saved a few more beans and gotten a more advanced model but this guy is all I need. I know I'll be getting an MD deck for my car!

3.0/5.03.0/5.03.0/5.03.0/5.03.0/5.0   Player more than Recorder
Reviewer: Anonymous from New York     December 17, 2001
This is my second MD player/recorder
(first was the sharp MT-15)

The Playback on this model is GREAT! but recording is very bad, autosync DOESNT WORK and is not compatiable with all optical interfaces

The auto level feature is bad, constant ducking !!!
The interface is too small too give you a good level check before recording

Other than that its great ,very small light weight very rugged
