I picked this minidisc player up in Japan. It has super long battery life 60hr. NiMH, 100hr. AAx1, and 165 hrs. if both are used in conjunction. I think there is no motor noise. The unit is super lightweight, I have smashed it and thought it would be the end days of it when skating but no, it keeps kickin'. Rechargeable stand comes with, the big downside is you should know about MD's before buying b/c it is in Japanese and if you aren't bilingual you could have a small problem, but for those familiar with MD's you can use it without even touching directions. Another problem is that it is not directly compatible with a pc so downloading songs onto this unit requires another unit like my kenwood mdx-j7 or comparable minidisc boombox that can copy onto MD, because there is no usb connector option on this model. It is still my best friend though, just to let you know.

After much deliberation, I decided to bite the bullet and buy a player of which I knew little about.
I am very glad I bought the Aiwa!
This unit is absolutely micro, and weighs a tiny 83g with Ni-MH battery. It has a distictive "classy" look and feel to it, unlike some other players. It is MDLP ready, and the sound from this little thing is AWESOME. It is VERY loud, and is very capable of delivering crisp clear sound from the high trebles, to the low, low bass.
Feature-wise, there is nothing Aiwa hasn't thought of. You get the usual play modes (repeat, repeat 1, program, random, etc), but there is a nifty little function called "sentence". From what I can gather, it will repeat a selection of a track that the listener chooses, over and over again. As claimed by Aiwa, it is "Great for language study". Only problem is, the entire instruction booklets (two of 'em) are in Japanese. But then again, the unit is Japanese-domestic only, and I had it specially imported. So I can't complain really, just be warned. The unit also offers "ear guard" (similar to Sony's AVLS), 3 step DSL (Dynamic Super Loudness) bass boost (which is HUGE), back-lit LCD remote, power-save function, auto-play features, very fast track search, and fast forward and rewind are extremly quick.
Aiwa has also claimed that the unit will start playing he disc after 0.6sec of hitting "play" when the disc is already in and the unit is off. They weren't lying. This little thing also reads the TOC very quickly, in about 2-3 seconds. Fast.
The clip-on "Sony MDRQ33-style" headphones are of, surprisingly, decent quality, with a handy play/stop button on the left ear piece. Only at high volume and DSL 3 will you get distortion, and even then it depends on the quality of the track you are playing.
Aiwa claims that the unit will play for up to 165 hrs in LP4. As my portable recorder only supports SP, I cannot say whether this is true. However, the claimed 90hrs of play in SP would not be very far off. In fact, I can believe this claim. This unit plays for hours and hours. I've had it for about 2 weeks now, and only recharged the battery (in its funky recharging cradle) once! Not a bad effort, as I listen to my music for hours on end each and every day.
The unit also has 3 funky LEDs on its back, which give show various information, like battery life, play mode, etc.
There is vitually no motor-noise at all.
This must be the best MDP that money can buy. I don't understand how people are willing to pay more for a Sony Player which has, at the very most, the same features but cosst a hell of a lot more.

Please consider this unit before you buy anything else!
